Job Summary

Take the next step in your administrative career

The British Columbia Review Board is a specialized statutory tribunal established by the Criminal Code of Canada under section 672.38 (1). Public safety is the paramount concern for the Board.
The Review Board has ongoing supervisory jurisdiction to hold hearings to make and review dispositions (orders) for any accused where a court has rendered a verdict of not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder (NCRMD) or unfit to stand trial (UST). In assuming jurisdiction following a court verdict, the Review Board holds a hearing within 45 days of the court verdict and at least once every 12 months until the accused is given an absolute discharge or, in fitness cases, until the Review Board determines the individual is fit to stand trial and is returned to court. A decision of the Review Board is comparable, in all respects, to a court order balancing the accused’s liberties and the safety of the public. These timelines are set out in the Criminal Code. The Review Board must take into account the safety of the public, which is the paramount consideration, the mental condition of the accused, the reintegration of the accused into society, and the other needs of the accused.

The Orders and Reasons Coordinator is responsible for editing reasons for judgment prior to distribution, in accordance with English grammar, style, and syntax and the BC Review Board style guide for writing and editing reasons for judgment. As part of the editing and review process, the position fact-checks reasons for judgment for accuracy of evidence (personal, psychiatric, and criminal history) and accurate references to applicable legislation and case law. This role is responsible for producing and distributing dispositions (orders), warrants, extended and amended orders, assessment orders, subpoenas, Inquiries Act orders, and stay inquiry documentation; fact-checking, editing and distributing reasons; and managing and distributing orders and reasons in accordance with internal policies and legislative requirements of Part XX.1 of the Criminal Code. The successful applicant will be working in a small office environment that provides an opportunity to be part of a team and gain experience in various administrative roles and responsibilities. The position interacts directly with the Chair of the board for all projects related to reasons, for example, the style guide and the reasons templates, as well as for sign off on all reasons. The position also interacts with alternate Chairs in relation to their draft reasons, requiring sensitivity and tact, as well as the confidence to make suggestions or advise of errors.
