JOB TITLE: Youth Services Administrative Assistant- Canada Summer Jobs


PROGRAM: Youth Services


REPORTS TO: Program Coordinator- Youth Services


HOURS OF WORK: 35 hours/week, 8 Weeks


HOURLY RATE: $15.50


The Canada Summer Jobs Program provides funding to help employers create summer job opportunities for students. It is designed to focus on local priorities, while helping both students and their communities.


The John Howard Society of York Region is a non-profit, charitable organization serving residents of York Region. The organization works with individuals involved in any stage of criminal justice involvement and their families.


Youth Services includes the Healthy Youth Preventative Education (HYPE) Program, HYPE+, Youth Counselling Program, Home Again, and Youth Reintegration Program which provides services to youth ages 11-29.


The primary function of this position is to provide administrative support to register and introduce youth to the programs.


Job Description:

  • Prepare and organize materials for youth programs
  • Complete individual intake assessments and provide referrals for clients who require support
  • Complete statistical data collection and client intake statistics
  • Schedule one-on-one counselling sessions for youth
  • Prepare materials for focus groups, analyze results, and generate report on outcomes
  • Answer general telephone inquiries and direct calls appropriately
  • Assist agency in program enhancement through identification of service gaps
  • Maintain and respect professional boundaries with clients and coworkers at all times
  • Ensure client confidentiality
  • Adhere to directives and program standards of John Howard Society of York Region
  • Engage in continuous learning as directed by the Program Coordinator
  • Complete all required training
  • Attend staff and team meetings
  • Accommodate day and evening hours
  • Assist program staff with various duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Must be a youth between the ages of 15-30 years old
  • Education in a Human Services/Criminal Justice related field or equivalent combination of experience and education is considered an asset
  • Ability to speak another language is an asset
  • Possess an understanding of institutional and other systemic barriers and how they impact youth development and access to services
  • Professional demeanour with strong rapport and relationship building skills
  • Ability to actively listen and provide an empathetic approach to client interaction
  • Knowledge of community resources throughout York Region with the ability to seek out new community resources as needed
  • Knowledge in suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention skills and safety planning; and ability to manage conflict, crises and escalating situations calmly and confidently
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and online meeting platforms
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and communities with an awareness of socioeconomic and language barriers
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate for evening and daytime sessions as needed
  • Access to a vehicle is preferred
