This is what you'll be doing:

The Senior Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) oversees the day to day operation of the Medical Laboratory Assistant team in collaboration with the Laboratory Manager and Charge Technologists. The Senior MLA provides strong technical support and consultation in all aspects of specimen management and ensures changes to processes and/or methods are communicated to staff.

Senior Medical Laboratory Assistant (SR MLA)

  • Organizes workflow and delegates responsibilities as required
  • Supports team in carrying out functions
  • Follows the staff scheduling policy to ensure bench coverage
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge of WHMIS. TDG, infection control procedures and lab safety
  • Ensures that all policies and procedures are followed and adhered to according to acceptable standards established by the Quality Management System, senior staff, licensing and accreditation bodies Collaborates with the Laboratory Quality Team
  • Develop and implement procedures for the evaluation of the technical competencies in collaboration with the colleagues and the Laboratory Quality Coordinator
  • Assists in preparation for laboratory accreditation assessment and performs gap analysis when needed
  • Review staff requests for vacations and approve as required
  • Maintains a proactive involvement in professional organizations.
  • Identifies and solves problems as they arise
  • Communicates clearly in writing and verbally with all clients and users of the service
  • Ensures flow of ideas, information and instructions between staff and management
  • Performs relevant maintenance of applicable equipment i.e. centrifuges
  • Responsible for inventory control and management of supplies as it pertains to specimen management
  • Participates in the implementation of new methods, equipment and software as required
  • Demonstrates advance knowledge base on Specimen Management
  • Develop/review/update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for specimen handling processes
  • Ensure that team understand role and responsibilities
  • Involves team in feedback of departmental decisions
  • Demonstrates knowledge of quality assurance
  • Aware of the implications of errors and generation of incident reports as required
  • Participate in the training and teaching of new technologists, technicians and student technologists
  • Provides opportunities to staff for professional development
  • Maintains MLPAO competency standards
  • Protect the confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with existing legislation and with the policies of Halton Healthcare Services
  • Comply with established safety regulations and maintain and promote safe working habits among staff
  • Perform other duties as required by the Charge Technologists, Laboratory Director and Laboratory Managers
  • Demonstrates competency in chosen profession; consistently demonstrate knowledge and expertise in professional practice and hospital-based standards
  • Demonstrates patient and consumer focus; makes a commitment to meet or exceed the needs of all internal and external customers

List of job qualifications (i.e. – Ability to compile, write and present reports.)

  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position
  • Satisfactory employment and attendance record
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant technical experience in specimen management and in a in a clinical laboratory setting
  • 3 - 5 years recent experience in phlebotomy
  • Excellent interpersonal and supervisor skills
  • Must possess excellent technical and computer skills, and be able to troubleshoot related equipment
  • Demonstrated excellence in facilitation, communication, team building and problem solving skills
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory information systems LIS, and general office software (Word, Excel etc.)
  • Laboratory Assistant Certification required
  • OSMT and/or CSMLS registration required
  • Medical Terminology Certificate
  • Experience working with the public
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
