Hatchery Assistant Job at Terrace Salmonid Enhancement Society
Job Summary
The Terrace Salmonid Enhancement Society requires hatchery assistants to help conduct Chinook and Coho salmon fry tagging programs at the Deep Creek Hatchery and Eby Street Hatchery from May 1st until the first week of June. Successful candidates will work closely in a small crew at the hatchery during the fin clipping and coded wire tagging portion of the program.
Kitsumkalum Chinook are renowned for boasting some of the largest Chinook in North America. Historically these fish have been known to reach up to 100 lbs in size, and although size at maturity is decreasing for this population, it is still not uncommon to capture fish 70+ lbs to this day. This project allows exploitation rates to be estimated for both the Kalum and the entire Skeena to be calculated, using the coded-wire tagged offspring.
Assistants will be at the hatchery Monday through Friday, where they are offered a unique opportunity to observe and handle juvenile salmon, as well as contribute to valuable research essential to the monitoring and conservation of this species.
Job Type / Category
The crews will generally work Monday to Friday, 8am to 4:30pm.
