Finance Director Job at Athabasca Tribal Council

The Finance Director provides leadership in accounting, financial reporting, and budgeting activities in accordance with organizational mandates and governance. They will also be responsible for the day-to-day organizational operations of the financial administration systems of the Athabasca Tribal council, to ensure all policies and procedures are operating successfully.
Main responsibilities included, but are not limited to:
Strategic
- Provide leadership for strategic business development and corporate planning on major business decisions, while developing program, organizational and financial agendas
- Evaluate current business strategies, determining the viability of changing management initiatives
- Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization
- Establish the financial and administrative controls of the company, making overarching company decisions, taking into account fiscal realities and departmental structure
Operational
- Analyze and interpret financial and accounting information, reviewing operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and other matters
- Develop and manage annual budget and long-term financial plans
- Administer the organization's funds according to the approved budget, and monitor its financial expenditures, allocating company resources to implement financial policies and programs
- Develop and implement short- and long-term financial budgets, plans and forecasts in accordance with business goals and objectives
- Prepare reports that outline financial standing in the areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and future operations
- Create or approve company-wide policies and procedures, ensuring they meet or exceed compliance requirements and best practice standards
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with government agencies and professional organizations such as consultancy and auditing firms
- Ensure that the Board of Directors is kept fully informed on the financial condition of the organization and all-important factors influencing it, including updates with financial reporting
- Establish and maintain relationships with strategic business partners and key stakeholders
- Main contact for external auditors, providing reports to auditors in a timely and efficient manner
The ideal candidate will have:
- Bachelor’s degree or masters degree in business, finance, accounting, or an industry-related field.
- Ten (10) years of progressive management experience in the financial industry, CPA Designation required.
- A working knowledge of and respect for Indigenous culture, including knowledge of relevant legislation, including experience working with ISC (Indigenous Services Canada)
- Experience with SAGE 300 accounting software
- Extensive experience and knowledge in dealing with accounting systems, budgets, internal controls, business planning, and asset management in a First Nation entity
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
- Possess advanced proficiency with accounting and financial software programs
