The Calgary Drop-In Centre (the DI) is more than an emergency shelter. We provide essential care as well as health services, employment training, and housing supports to people who need help. Our programs and services connect people to permanent housing that meets their individual needs. Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Advisor, Systems, Research and Impact, the Data Analyst Summer Student Position supports the goal of ending chronic homelessness at the DI, by leveraging and harnessing the power of data in the not-for-profit sector. The DI has a very large and robust dataset, that requires time and attention to recalibrate the data sets to align with the ever-changing needs and barriers that individuals experiencing homelessness often face. The Data Analyst will work with the Senior Advisor, as well as the Organizational Impact Analyst, to assist in the creation of reports and data visualization tools in order to frame existing data and establish frameworks for new data sets.
Time Commitment
Not less than 40 hours per rotation; with 5 days on and 2 days off. Some unusual hours may be required from time to time as the need arises. These hours may be altered at the discretion of management

Job Duties
- Data Management
- Assist with maintaining data integrity on the DI's internal database, Guestbook
- Assisting with developing a strategy for articulating the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness, through the use of data
- Preparing data for entry by compiling and sorting information; establishing data entry priorities
- Reviewing historical DI records to create a migration plan to the new database
- Amalgamate and format large quantities of data into meaningful data sets for analysis
- Undertake analysis and processing of data sets to produce metrics, indices and summary reports that enable efficient and informed decisions
- Collaboration with our internal Information Technology (IT) team to explore new automated solutions for data presentation and analysis
- Research and identify new data solutions for implementation within the organization
- Complete information management related projects as assigned
- Administrative support
- Responding to and triaging internal data requests
- Creation of internal processes to support the agency's strategic priority of increasing internal data capacity
- Developing and enhancing our unit testing, data validation and governance processes to ensure the accuracy of our data portfolio
- Other administrative tasks as assigned
Required Competencies
- Currently enrolled in computer science or data science / analytics program, or mathematics, statistics, commerce, or business analysis programs
- Proficient in Office365 and Microsoft Office Suite 2016
- Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
- The ability to make sound rational decisions based on information provided and employ critical thinking where information may not be clear.
- Experience or understanding of open-source software frameworks (Dynamics365), data visualization tools (PowerBI), and databases (SQL and/or VBA)
- Apply solid technical knowledge to understand and apply records management principles, concepts, tools, and technologies
- Resiliency and stress tolerance and the ability to maintain composure, remain calm and focused when dealing with a high volume of volatile and stressful situations.
- Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills including the ability to deal with several priorities at the same time
- High morals, ethics, and integrity

Working Conditions
While your position does not normally consist of front line work, it is important for us to tell you that front-line staff are exposed to emotionally disturbing events, such as: medical distress, threatened/actual serious injury, violence, abuse, and death; where clients may be experiencing fear, terror, hopelessness, rage, self-harm and conflict. It is understood and accepted that you will be working in distress and/or high-stress situations, which may include emergency response where resiliency and stress tolerance and the ability to maintain composure, remain calm and focused is imperative. Exposure to bodily fluids may also occur.
