Project Description

Aki Kikinomakaywin (Learning on the land) is a three-year (2022-2024) Indigenous- and women-led program focused on supporting Ontario’s northern First Nation youth in building confidence in accessing post-secondary STEM-based education. This program aims to accomplish this through building excitement and comfort around attending post-secondary institutions through an immersive water focused, hands-on, land based, Indigenous- and women-led experience. In 2022, over 25 First Nations youth (ages 12-14) from northern Ontario communities participated

in a one-week on-campus program at Lakehead University. The program integrates Indigenous intelligence (i.e., knowledge and science) and western science through a Two-Eyed Seeing Indigenous Impact Assessment framework. Youth participated in land-based, in-lab, and hands-on activities with a focus on Indigenous language exposure throughout. Youth left the program with improved knowledge of STEM career awareness, and knowledge of post-secondary institution programs, program requirements and available resources. Youth were surrounded by Indigenous Knowledge Holders, Elders, and student mentors throughout the program and were supported through ceremony and camaraderie. In the remaining years (2023-2024), the program will continue to be expanded and enhanced.A series of community-based events, primarily day-long workshops in the Algoma region, will be offered in addition to the one-week camp in Thunder Bay, ON, and consideration of a 2 nd one-week camp at Algoma University will be given.
