Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.
Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products.
Our Team:
The North Atlantic Long Term Geology Central Support team supports all underground and near mine exploration activities. Our team is focused on providing quality and timely geological inputs and resource estimates to support the long range mine design and mid-range planning processes.
The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Senior Geologist, Local 2020-05 to join our Sudbury Operations .
The purpose of this role is to provide geological support to active Ontario mining operations and projects by locating, estimating and documenting mineral resources and mineable reserves. Administer, support and develop geological applications for all users and work closely with engineering to support the mine designs for the Life of Mine Plan.
The Senior Geologist will also help support and mentor junior employees that work in the Core Logging Facility.

Accountabilities
- Follow departmental safety program.
- Work in the Geology and in-Mines Exploration North Atlantic central services team to provide geological input and support to the Life of Mine Planning (LOMP) process on an ongoing basis.
- Compile and review geological data to create or update and document geological models and mineral resource estimates. This work includes assessing risk, seeking opportunities and completing mineral resource estimates in compliance with company and legislated resource and reserve reporting standards, including NI 43-101, CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves, TSE Disclosure Standards, Project Delivery System (PDS), and MTS guidelines.
- Support Scoping, Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility studies for various ore bodies & projects in Ontario Operations and occasionally across North Atlantic.
- Mentor and train geologists in all aspects of geological data collection in support of mineral resource estimation. Provide support and training for the use of Vale custom scripts and geological database applications.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders to facilitate integration of mineral resources and mine designs into geological database applications in order to support grade control practices and Mineral Reserve and Mineral Resource reporting.
- Assist with MRMR documentation of annual mineral resources and mineral reserves inventory and transactions
- Provide core logging, sampling, QAQC support at the Stobie Core Logging Facility.
- Communicate changes in ore interpretation and block estimate results, risks and opportunities to engineering and operations.
- Identify, analyze and recommend opportunities for safety, productivity and cost improvements.
- Occasional underground travel may be required
- Current schedule is 5 days per week Monday to Friday (excluding recognized holidays).
- Communicate observed and potential safety hazards to mine supervision.
- Research, recommend and support implementation of new projects to improve technological advancements in the work conducted by the team.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior employees.
- Carry out specific accountabilities as assigned by the Chief Geologist.
Qualifications and Specific Skills:
Education: The successful candidate will possess at a minimum, a Geological diploma, B.Sc Geology or B.Sc Geological Engineering.
Professional Qualifications: APGO
Experience: The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of five years of progressive relevant experience in an underground mining environment.
Other Skills:
Advanced understanding and knowledge of Vale Ontario Operations Geological Systems including: MEBS (Mines Exploration Bore Hole System), MRM (Mineral Resource Management database and reporting system including Mineability and Dilution), AMGC (All Mines Grade Control), Diamond Drill Hole Layouts.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products to include Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook. Advanced understanding and proficiency with Datamine R StudioRM software to process, visualize and interpret 3D geological data for modelling and grade interpolation.
Knowledge of Vale MTS geological guidelines and standards.
Knowledge of Mining, Milling and Refining Processes.
Demonstrated competency in Datamine R StudioRM, and MS Office tools.
