On-site Sewage System Program – Maintenance Inspection Technician (North Bay Office)

Your Opportunity

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) On-site Sewage System program helps protect the environment and people’s health and safety by regulating and ensuring compliance with Part 8 of the Ontario Building Code (OBC). Reporting to the North Bay area supervisor, the On-site Sewage System (OSS) Maintenance Inspection Technician will provide inspections on new and existing septic systems located in designated areas within Nipissing and Parry Sound District.

The Ontario Building Code (OBC) requires all sewage systems identified as a “significant threat” to drinking water sources to be inspected every five years as part of an OBC Mandatory Maintenance Inspection (MMI) program. These inspections help identify faulty sewage systems that may be contributing phosphorus to creeks, streams, rivers and lakes, which in turn contribute to the growth of blue-green algae. Sewage systems located within the Issue Contributing Area (ICA), 120 meters of any watercourse, wetland or transport pathway that flows into Callander Bay are subject to an inspection. As a technician, you will be conducting inspections on lands currently serviced by onsite sewage systems that fall within the MMI ICA to ascertain compliance with the Ontario Building Code.

The OSS Maintenance Inspection Technician must also provide excellent customer service and possess good communication skills to work with property owners and stakeholders and act as an ambassador for NBMCA with members of the general public. Individual must be self-motivated, punctual, able to work with minimal supervision, and possess a positive attitude. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

· Background research on properties

· Conduct site inspections of existing systems within the “significant threat” areas as required by legislation;

· Review and conduct site inspections of lands currently serviced or proposed to be serviced by on-site sewage systems to ascertain compliance with the provisions of the Ontario Building Code, Municipal By-laws and other applicable regulations and standards

· Work in a professional manner with all stakeholders to deliver superior customer service.

· Complete reporting and administrative procedures as required;

· Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and NBMCA’s safety policies;

· Other duties as assigned.

Your Qualifications

· Post-secondary education in environmental or engineering technology or other closely related field;

· Certification as a sewage system inspector for Part 8 of the Ontario Building Code & Act is an asset (or willingness to obtain the designation);

· Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, under pressure, while meeting daily deadlines and maintaining accuracy.

· Strong computer and word processing abilities (e.g., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Professional and use of digital mapping software).

· Superior customer service skills;

· Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment;

· Ability to prioritize workload and to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision;

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

· Ability and aptitude for field work;

· Standard first aid is required;

· Valid M.T.O. driver’s license “G” with a clean driving record.

Your Reward

Salary range of $25.70 to $28.91 per hour, based on a 35-hour work week.

Contract position starting around May 1, 2023 and ending December 31, 2023.
