Our open-pit mine and concentrator in Voisey’s Bay – Vale’s only fly-in/fly-out operation in Canada – produces nickel-cobalt-copper concentrate and copper concentrate. An underground expansion will see a transition to a leading edge underground mine extending the life of the mine until 2034. Our state-of the-art facility in Long Harbour is the first nickel processing plant in the world to use hydrometallurgy technology to produce Plating Rounds TM from hard rock (sulphide) concentrate, with low carbon footprint compared to traditional smelter technology. A team of employees across the province provide support to the Newfoundland and Labrador Operations.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Mine Operator 1 to join our Surface Mine Operations department in Voisey’s Bay, NL . This is a permanent position.

This position is based at the Voisey’s Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a two week on, two week off rotation .

The primary role of the Mine Operator 1 is to operate mine heavy equipment and/or participate in drilling and blasting activities within the open pit mine. Additionally, i n this position, you will:

• Deposit loads of ma t erials into tru c ks or ex c ava t ions;
• O perate a variety of heavy equi p men t safely v ia ha n d signal s , radio c ommu n i c a t ion and using o cc upant safety devi c es;
• Perform pre-operational c hecks of equipmen t as well as basi c maintenan c e on tra c k or rubber tire undercarriage, bu c kets, and a t ta c hmen t s; lubri c a t e equipmen t c omponen t s and atta c hmen t s;
• Complete and maintain eq u ipmen t log sheets and repor t s;
• Work c ooperatively with supervisors and c o-workers;
• Provide fundamen t al kno w ledge on soil c hara c teristi c s, map readin g , and ground c onditions;
• Load, move, dump earth, ro c k, sand, gra v el or snow;
• Assist in m aintenan c e a c tivities around the pit in c ludi n g moving and instal l ing dewa t e r ing pump s , installing and movi n g pipe l ines and bit sharpening;
• Comply w ith work safety poli c ies and safety regula t ions su c h as O H&S, Na t ural Gas regula t ions , weights and dimen s ions, c arria g e of goods, Hig h way Traffi c A c t, and WHMIS.

About You

Education:

• Minimum Grade 10/Level 1 Education or equivalent;
• Certif i ed as a Level I I I Blaster under the NL Department of Edu c a t ion;

Experience:

• Candida t es must ha v e pre v ious expe r ien c e operatin g a CAT 777 Hau l Tru c k, C AT 824G Whee l Dozer, 16H Grader, CAT D9R Tra c k Dozer, CAT 385 and 345 Excava t or.
• Candidates must also have one of the following:
  • 1000 hours operating the CAT 992/993G Front End Loader; OR
  • 3000 hours operating Produ c tion Drills;
• Minimum of 6 months of operating experien c e in an industrial mine setting;

Skills:

• Hold or be able to obtain a valid site drive r ’s li c ense ;
• Demonstra t e a strong c on c ern for Safety, Health and Environmen t ;
• S t rong ability to work c ooperatively within a team env i ronment;
• Demonstra t e initia t ive and abi l ity to work independen t ly.
