The Food Safety Branch is currently looking for casual meat inspectors that can work on call (no guaranteed hours).
As a Meat Inspector, you will be responsible for providing slaughter inspection services at provincial abattoirs.
Duties while performing kill floor inspection services will include:
- pre-operation inspection
- ante and post-mortem examination of animals
- completion of time reporting and;
- relevant inspection documentation
This position is a regulatory role and involves the onsite enforcement of provincial statutes administered by the Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS).
The Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS) is responsible for regulating: 115 red meat and poultry abattoirs, 110 mobile butchers and 48 mobile butcher facilities in Alberta.

Qualifications
Two (2) year technical diploma in a related field, preferably in Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, or Food Safety/Food Science, and two (2) years of directly related meat inspection work experience.
Equivalencies maybe considered - directly related experience considered on the basis of:
1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

- animal diseases and pathology
- humane handling and stunning requirements
- sanitation practices
- food safety control programs
You must be familiar with and have the ability to interpret:
- Meat Inspection Act
- Meat Inspection Regulation
- Meat Facility Standards
Ability to use computer technology and computer applications is necessary in this role for the purposes of daily communication and the preparation of inspection reports/documentation.

Salary
$31.29 to $40.98 / hour
Notes
Position Information:
- Office located in Airdrie
- This is an on call position – there are no guaranteed hours and days of work vary week to week, often with short notice.
- Extended working hours and/or travel may be required to complete assigned field work
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean abstract is required.
- Ability to work under varying site conditions including, inclement weather conditions and wet surface areas/environments
- PPE will be provided
