Job Summary

Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services (YFPS) is mandated to provide inpatient and outpatient Court-ordered and Court-related assessment and treatment services to young persons pursuant to the Youth Criminal Justice Act as well as other relevant federal and provincial statutes. YFPS also provides services to young persons found unfit to stand trial and those youth found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder (NCRMD), pursuant to the Criminal Code of Canada. Services are provided through outpatient clinics and contracted service providers located throughout the province. An Inpatient Assessment Unit (IAU), located in Burnaby provides mental health services to Youth Custody Services in BC. Regional outpatient clinics located in Burnaby, Langley, Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Prince George, Kamloops and Kelowna service the four macro regions of the North, the Interior, Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

Assessment and treatment services for youth may include specialized treatment services for: youth who may have committed violent or sexual offences; youth who have offended and are experiencing mental health, behavioral, drug and/or alcohol addiction problems; and youth in custody facilities who are in need of mental health services.

Reporting to the Regional Office Administrator (ROA), this position provides administrative and secretarial support services for the clinic coordinator and staff at the YFPS outpatient clinics.

Job Requirements:

  • High school/secondary school graduation or equivalent (GED).
  • Three (3) years of administrative support/secretarial experience in an office environment; OR, equivalent education (i.e. successful completion of a recognized legal, medical or office assistant certificate program) supplemented by some work experience and training.
  • Current certification of 50 words per minute keyboarding speed
  • Experience/training in keyboarding, word processing, proofreading, dictation/dicta-typing, electronic email and other standard computer based applications (i.e. MS Office Suite – Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe Acrobat).


Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • Reception and/or front-line customer service experience.
  • Records management experience using an electronic case management system (i.e. CARIS, ICM, ARCS/ORCS, etc.)
  • Word processing medico-legal documentation experience and familiarity with medical terminology (i.e. medico-legal, psychiatric and psychological).
  • Experience and/or the skills to cope with working in close proximity to potentially aggressive, violent or otherwise unpredictable youth.
