The Business Development Officer - Industry Solutions (BDO-IS) supports business development of industry-driven initiatives facilitated through the External Division and in collaboration with the Academic divisions. The role exists to help identify, develop, manage, and execute strategies that increase Bow Valley College’s industry partnerships, commercialization of intellectual property (IP), external presence in corporate training and consulting, and secure new business opportunities.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Industry Solutions, the incumbent will be responsible for projects and activities related to the development of industry services and activities with commercial potential. Through establishing and maintaining effective networks, the BDO-IS will collaborate with business and industry groups to build strong and vibrant links that promote mutually beneficial revenue generating partnerships. Industry outreach and initial follow-up to internal/external stakeholders on potential partnerships opportunities is also expected. The incumbent will indirectly support all partnership initiatives at Bow Valley College through external promotion and advocacy.

The BDO-IS will also play an active role in the identification, protection, and commercial exploitation of intellectual property (IP) developed at the College through a variety of commercial arrangements including licensing, franchising, assignment and start-up company creation. The BDO-IS will act as the subject matter expert to commercialize IP acting as a resource to guide the college in how to effectively value, commercialize and protect IP.

Responsibilities include generating and responding to business enquiries related to corporate training services, commercial research, managing response timelines and key deliverables with partners, supporting the development of partnership projects, preparing relevant stakeholder communications, engaging the business community, and developing marketing strategies and materials to support business engagement activities. The role will support the Associate Director, Industry Solutions to develop and implement business plans, deliver presentations to key stakeholders, conduct surveys and/or analyze data, and assess the development of potential services and future trends. The incumbent will have outstanding organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and deliver on key milestones.

Strategic Operations
  • Works with the Associate Director, Industry Solutions, to plan, develop, prepare, implement, and execute strategic business and operational plans relevant to strategic partnerships and product commercialization, including the development of new/mandated services.
  • Prioritizes initiatives based on return on investment and short and long-term objectives.
  • Provides regular updates of project and training outcomes, internally and externally, to identify issues that may impact the success of corporate partnerships strategic planning and goals.
  • Helps build and maintain Bow Valley College’s presence as a leader in Strategic Partnerships and commercialization through business development, memberships, and partnership opportunities.
  • Supports the design, collection and analysis of data and information related to excellence in the development, delivery, assessment and review of services and business opportunities for relevant stakeholders, as required.
  • Keeps the Associate Director informed about sensitive matters in the areas of responsibility.
  • Ensures relevant policies, procedures, and processes are consistently applied.
  • Aids in the recruitment, training, and guiding of new business development staff.
Service Delivery
  • Aids with the administration and promotion of investment in strategic partnerships and commercialization at the College.
  • Knowledgeable about the College’s relevant service offerings, entrepreneurial activities and commercialization of products and services that can benefit industry partners. Refers industry connections who can benefit from other relevant College partner groups and services to appropriate individual/team for follow-up.
  • Under the direction of the Associate Director, Industry Solutions, provides input and helps coordinate continuous improvement activities including service review, integrity, maintenance, and development.
  • Promotes and develops cooperation internally and externally, ensuring appropriate service standards are met.
  • Surveys potential and existing external partners to determine service preferences, assess development of potential services, and identify future trends impacting service delivery.
Industry Solutions
  • Partners with industry, community, and public-sector stakeholders to scope, design and negotiate projects, translate ideas into commercial opportunities and advance the College’s training priorities based on external requirements (e.g., funders), internal expertise, and market opportunities.
  • Reviews, communicates, and coordinates project requirements for partner agreements, as required.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with stakeholders to develop new consultancy projects that provide solutions to industry or community problems.
  • Through external engagement, maintains up-to-date knowledge of relevant trends that may impact local and regional partnerships and shares these with the Associate Director, Industry Solutions.
Intellectual Property Commercialization
In collaboration with the Associate Director, Industry Solutions and the Legal Counsel Commercial & Access and Privacy Officer (as required):
  • Supports Intellectual property (IP) valuation process to assess the monetary value of IP assets.
  • Conducts internal and external IP audits to define relevant IP assets that can help achieve business objectives.
  • Maintains IP inventory checklist including inventory of IP with associated recommended protections and actions to consider.
  • Analyses findings of IP audits to identify gaps and opportunities in how IP can be used to achieve business goals.
  • Supports the development of an IP strategy and plans including the development offensive, defensive, licencing and financing tactics.
  • Supports the development of go-to-market strategies and plans including Sales/Export, Licensing, Franchising, Partnering / Strategic alliance, Assignment (selling the IP), Spin-off.
  • Maintains knowledge of tools, resources, grants, and supports to protect IP inside and outside of Canada.
  • Performs research to confidently make data-driven decisions.
  • Identifies opportunities and potential partnerships to support the development and commercialization of IP.
  • Completes assessments of IP in various potential market application spaces. This includes searching publicly available sources and securing direct feedback about the opportunity from companies in the identified markets.
  • Works with IP creators and/or teams to prepare and submit funding proposals for prototype development.
  • Monitors competitive activity in specific fields of interest to develop reports in support of commercialization and product development.
  • Develops and delivers presentations for internal and external stakeholders, such as IP - awareness workshops to campus audiences or presentations on College commercialization activities to foreign delegations
  • Clearly and concisely communicates the value of IP products in a meaningful way to internal and external stakeholders using multiple media formats and communication tools.
Develops and Sustains Relationships / Business Development
  • Generates, establishes, develops, and maintains mutually beneficial relationships with prospective industry and business partners for industry partnerships and commercialization opportunities.
  • In collaboration with Associate Director, Industry Solutions, assesses new business opportunities and develops strategies to attract additional investment/partnerships.
  • Coordinates, organizes, and implements various aspects of client leads generation including gathering, correlating and compiling research on companies, creating proposals and responding to requests for proposals.
  • Fosters a positive culture of business development by following processes that facilitate the cost-effective delivery of revenue generating products and services.
  • Responds to and maintains a database of business development opportunities.
  • Provides consulting, advice, and onboarding of new and existing partners regarding business objectives, procedures and compliance requirements for proposal development and to develop detailed deliverables with external stakeholders.
  • Promotes successful partnerships and projects to external partners to develop new projects and cultivate a positive reputation with new and existing stakeholders.
  • Contributes to relevant Key Performance Indicators, as set by the Associate Director in collaboration with leadership in the External Division.
  • Analyzes and shares stakeholder feedback to determine satisfaction with products/services. Establishes mechanisms for feedback loops to ensure continuous improvement.
Marketing and Promotion of Strategic Partnerships
  • Promotes the benefits of strategic partnerships to potential industry partners and stakeholders to position Bow Valley College as a leader within the College sector.
  • Contributes to the planning, development and implementation of marketing and communication strategies and initiatives to support existing and new service delivery.
  • Prepares and delivers information to relevant external stakeholders through presentations, conferences, or workshops.
  • Provides insights into product development and competitive positioning of services to identify and develop new business markets and opportunities.
  • Collaborates with leadership to determine the most viable, cost-effective approach to pursuing new business opportunities.
  • Attends conferences, meetings, and industry events to develop new partnerships, enhance existing partnerships, and establish external presence.
Project Management
  • Develops and tracks progress to ensure external partners are meeting agreed upon project timelines.
  • Researches, analyzes and reports on emerging trends and issues in the marketplace; makes business development recommendations based on those trends.
  • Influences without authority.
  • Provides continuous feedback on reputational risk, mutually beneficial outcomes, and feasibility for new projects throughout the development process.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Business or related area)
  • Minimum of 3 years related experience working with industry and community partners in collaborative, project-based work
  • Demonstrated connection to and awareness of local regional industry environment, industry trends, new disciplines and emerging technologies
  • Demonstrated experience in project and research management
  • Strong attention to detail, highly entrepreneurial, creative, open-minded, persistent, and highly collaborative
  • Experience in product development and/or commercialization
  • Ability to travel
  • Valid passport and ability to obtain international or business visas without restriction
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Business or relevant research area
  • Skilled at facilitating business discussions that bridge the gap between the academically- oriented nature of a post-secondary institution and bottom-line driven entrepreneurial goals of business sector partners and venture investors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in negotiating commercialization deals (i.e., Licensing, startup formation), including managing the development of associated documentation to formalize such deals (i.e., term sheets, license agreements, incorporation, etc.)
  • Some demonstrated understanding of the patent prosecution process and how patents are classified and cited in order to undertake meaningful patent prior art search strategies
  • Experience in post-secondary technology transfer, commercialization, intellectual property management or research partnership development
  • Superior knowledge and experience implementing sales strategies
  • Proven ability to build relationships and collaborate in a highly complex environment
  • Ability to manage through influence and create sense of common purpose
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills; ability to develop and maintain a high profile and establish an effective two-way dialogue with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to manage negotiation of resources.
  • Able to manage perceptions and expectations in difficult situations
  • Strong administrative and management skills; able to identify and prioritize competing needs and handle multiple projects concurrently
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully developing and managing budgets
  • Basic understanding of the post-secondary education
